Garden Project 2007

At my residence in Minneapolis, The Environmental Protection Agency,tested our soil and discovered arsenic at unacceptable levels, an EPA super fund site. The soil was removed to a depth of 18 inches, and replaced by clean soil. This project documents the process of removing and replacing the soil as well as the transformation of the yard space into a semi-public artspace.

I have been working with clay, which is a new experience for me. I have created these Human Head Bird Feeders out of porcelain. A willow branch serves as a perch for birds and they eat directly from the mouth. The birds are a touch nervous but they seem to be getting used to the idea. It seems like a form of human to bird communication.

Here is the camouflage pattern I designed and created, which was printed on the garment that was worn with the human head bird feeder mask:
